Just a bit of a make-over for “A Collaborative View”… In line with my move into the World of Google, I am rebadging this blog and that brings with it a new name.

So from this post forward my blog is going to be called “Looking to the Cloud”, and the old web address of http://www.collaborativeview.com will still point to it for a period as any that are following the blog make the transition to:

http://www.lookingtothecloud.com

Both addresses will get you here in the interim, and all the old content has been imported into the new site.

I’m looking forward to this journey as we look to the Cloud and all the interesting trends and new technologies, and the benefits (and challenges) that we face as we see the World make that transition as well.

Let me know what you think!

It’s been a hectic week, but after ten years of playing with IBM Technologies in the Collaboration Space, I have finally “Gone Google!”

As of Wednesday this week, I have started as a Senior Sales Manager for Australia’s Leading Google Enterprise Business Partner, HEDLOC, looking after the Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australian territories.

This has been a while in the making and as you will have seen, many of my posts to this blog has been related to Google and its travels in the Collaboration World.

While my times with IBM and the Lotus Technologies in particular have been great, I believe Google has the next Enterprise Evolution, as far as collaboration technologies go, well and truly in it’s sights (and business model)

The Cloud Phenomenon is definitely gaining momentum, with many CEOs and CIOs coming on board with a Cloud Vision for their organisations.

In many cases, the numbers stack up, only too compellingly. I also believe Google has the greatest brand for the Cloud, and you have to admire their corporate vision and culture. The place oozes with Innovation.

So watch this space… You will definitely hear more from me as this trend gathers pace.

Cloud Interest Increasing in Australia – Salesforce Numbers show 33% Increase March 30, 2010

Salesforce.com has released data indicating a 33% increase in the number of customers in Australia and New Zealand with an increase of 700 to 2800 customers overall in the last year.

I’m not the slightest bit surprised given this covers the worst of the GFC when organisations would have investigated lower-cost alternatives for their operations.

Even Google uses Salesforce for their CRM, so you don’t get a better endorsement for the product than from a company whose complete business model is built around Cloud operational models.

This article from ZDNet highlights the Salesforce release.

The Future of the Media – Google Speaks March 24, 2010

Eric Schmidt (Google’s CEO) was the Keynote at the Media Summit in Abu Dhabi this week.

If you read between the lines, you can see his powerful interest in the advent this year of Tablets like the (unmentioned by name) iPad and how the media will be targeting these devices.

If I’m not mistaken, you might see a potential veiled early announcement of an Android based Google Tablet as well.

Here’s the video:

Nice inclusion of the live machine transcribed subtitling (in Beta) and the translating!

Microsoft Online Bleeds leaving Google Search Unscathed February 15, 2010

While a lot of the online community is a-buzz at the moment with Google’s latest distraction, the underlying battle for mindshare in the online World is perhaps better demonstrated by the recent posting of Microsoft’s Online Business losses.

As reported in CIO Magazine today, “This division has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars for two years (it reported a $466 million income loss for the last three months of 2009)”. Much of it due to the increased cost of gaining traffic. (Purchasing traffic through promotions and deals).

eg. the $10M USD recently spent to gain access to Twitter feeds mentioned in my recent post “2010: The Google v. Microsoft War to Intensify

And during all of this they haven’t greatly touched Google Search’s business, mostly cannibalising the Yahoo Search marketshare instead.

With the Microsoft/Yahoo search partnership threatened by this performance, how much more will MS be willing to wear before they reconsider the strategy?

2010: The Changing Face of the Internet – Globalisation December 29, 2009

One of the interesting trends to watch unfold in 2010 is the release of the US centric controlling interests in ICANN with the late 2009 Management changes and the acceptance of non-latin characters for internet addresses.

When you think about it, this has the potential (and inevitable) eventuality of strongly changing the character of the predominantly english content of the web over time, and the knock-on effects that brings… How do you enter the website address for an arabic website in farsi? or a doublebyte website address for a japanese site in kanji?

How will an english speaking user even find such a site? (watch the power of Google Translate come to the fore)

Have a look at this article in today’s Australian by Mahesh Sharma…

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/innovations-to-spread-as-us-cedes-internet-control/story-e6frg8zx-1225814235591

He has an interesting outlook on the effects this may bring about, including the World shift of innovation, commercialisation and educational excellence as the US cedes control of this space.

With the emerging giants in China and India, this may very well take an interesting turn…

2010: The Google v. Microsoft War to Intensify December 23, 2009

A great Analyst piece was released by ComputerWorld today outlining the outlook (no pun intended) for the battle between Google and Microsoft in 2010.

Have a look at the article by Sharon Gaudin in the US that was released this morning:

http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/330795/news_analysis_google_microsoft_escalate_war_2010/

This snippet from the article is a good  summary:

[“These two companies really squared off this year,” said Jim McGregor, an analyst with In-Stat. “Both are looking for dominant positions in the Internet. For Google to increase its business, it needs to move into other territory. For Microsoft to have significant growth opportunities, it needs to become an Internet powerhouse, and they know it. This is not a war that is going to be won by one or two battles. This is going to be a prolonged activity.”

He added that the battle isn’t simply over which can be called top dog, because the fight is critical to both companies. “For Google, it’s about expanding, and for Microsoft, it’s about a life-or-death challenge,” McGregor said.]

I noticed with amounts paid for both Google’s ($15M) and Microsoft’s ($10M) ability to search the Twitter stream this week, we have a fairly healthy indicator of the battle between the two over online search.

http://www.itproportal.com/portal/news/article/2009/12/22/twitter-set-make-profit-2009-thanks-bing-google/

Another article this week alluded to Google’s current research (some 25 odd projects) into increasing internet speeds.

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/185239/google_races_to_speed_up_the_web.html

I think 2010 is going to be an interesting year in this space as we see the battle for domination of the web pan out.

Google Government Cloud & Public Sector Solutions September 24, 2009

Two announcements in the last week from Google focusing on the Public Sector.

The first being that Google is engaged with the US Federal Government to create a secure Government Cloud. That is, all the Google services, but secured out to the Federal Government alone.

At a recent Longhaus Hypothetical “Government with its Head in the Cloud“, Local (Australian) Government organisations have said that a similar approach would be needed for any significant uptake by Australian Government bodies. I’m sure they will be watching the US Feds closely as they delve into this initiative.

And also last week, but noticed by me today on Twitter, Senator Conroy launched Google for Public Sector.

Both a serious play at the, Federal in particular, Governments in the US and Australia, and I assume other countries as well.

Google Wave Presentation by Lars Rasmussen June 30, 2009

I am sitting in the presentation by Dr Lars Rasmussen from Google about the story of Google Maps and what he calls a “stealthy” project called Google Wave.

Presentations of Maps used in Hurricane Katrina, the Victorian Fires, the number of users of Google Maps Worldwide and the Volunteer map builders used in places like Zimbabwe.

Lars just mentioned that Streetview was a Stanford Project. (Which happened to be where Larry & Sergey went to University)

I just asked Lars about the issue that some people have commented about, with live presentation of text as it is typed… His response was that you adjust to the nature of this and that some people will respond before you have even corrected your spelling.

Wrapping up with what Wave is all about. I see Sharepoint squarely in the sights.
